Who Needs 'Em?

I had a very fruitful weekend of thrifting.  I snagged some great items for a great deal.  My most favorite new purse is this vintage eel skin purse I picked up for less than three bucks.  I was with my good buddy Jimmy when I picked this purse up and started examining it.  He had a good eye and knew right away that it was eel skin, and I was hooked.  I was on a good deal high (you get those, right?) when I showed my purse to my friend Allison when I started wondering if it was wrong to own genuine animal skin.  I cracked up when she said "Who cares? What good are eels anyway?"
Top: f21
Pants: Mossimo
Cami: Eddie Bauer
Shoes: Aldo
Belt: Old Navy
Purse: vintage

I'd never seek out animal skin, but I'm okay with buying it thrifted or vintage.  What is your opinion on animal skin?

I was just having this convo with a fellow thrift-loving friend...somehow it seems more "ok" when it's an animal that you don't like (alligator, snake, eel) than when it's a cute little animal you might like (giraffe, rabbit, fox).

I feel kind of creepy wearing fur, but I regularly wear (and love) leather so I'd be a hypocrite if I said I was against all skin. I think aside from leather, though, I pretty much try to stick with avoiding buying it new and only buying animal skin if it's thrifted.

Good Morning Kinsey! I love animal skin ANYthing. And for less than $3 YOU scored a GREAT bag girl! Love the color and it's perfect for fall. I bet it's smooth too! HAHA Just remember, since when have pythons, crocs, and eels been our friends. I've never shook hands with one yet! HAHAHAHA Have a great day!

OMG! That vintage purse is AMAZING! as are your top and shoes!

I'm really kinda weird on the topic of animal skin. On the one hand, I really love leather goods. I mean, nothing beats a great leather jacket or well-made shoes. Faux leather just doesn't compare. However, Furs are definitely a no-no to me. Even vintage furs, no thanks. Faux fur is fine, I suppose. And I do like furry/fuzzy hats!

I'm with you. I think if it's thrifted/vintage, it's fine. It's recycling what's already been made. Though I suppose it kind of supports the industries ideas that we want this kind of product, I think as long as we make it known we don't want them producing anything new it's at least better. There are so many faux options out there so that helps too. But really, your friend is right. What good are eels anyway? haha

LOL at your friend's comment about eels! This purse is a GREAT find! Way to go!

I don't really know how I feel about animal skins/furs. I think I'm kinda like you. When my Grandma passed away, I got some of her real furs. I love them, even if they aren't P.C. And I love leather. But I don't think I would ever seek out real fur/leather. But if I saw something cute in a vintage or thrift shop that was real, I wouldn't feel bad about buying it either . . .

Eww eels are so gross. I like them better as your bag.

Love your outfit!

And my views on skins are hella contradicting, so I'll just keep them to myself :)

Love love LOVE this classy and trendy at the same time.

I think if it's vintage, it's fine - it's a little late to do anything about that one, anyway.

Hi, I stumbled onto your cute blog and wanted to let you know that I think you have a really fun style. I am all about vintage/thrift finds. As for skins and fur not wholesale, I kind of figure they have already passed on so...
Anyway keep up the sweet blog

Love the top and your new bag. Eels make great bags - they are much cuter that way!

that bag is gorgeous! I had one similar to it a few years back and some vintage pumps that matched. The shoes were too tight, and I passed them on through my circle of eBay-ing :) I think furs and leather and suede are all gorgeous, but I do think it is much better to buy them used/vintage/thrifted than plunking down the money for a freshly-slaughtered animal. Your purse buy is just fine :)
