Best of 2014

2014 was a pretty big year for me.  I bought my first house, got married, rededicated time to IKC and adopted a new pup.  All I need now is a big glass of wine and to sleep until 2016.  Here are some of my favorite outfits from 2014.  Click on any of the pictures to check out the post they came from.

The Hermitage

This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting my dad's hometown of Brookville, IN to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday.  She is the kind of woman you'd aspire to be like because despite her age she is super active in the community, takes no medication and still drives her minivan all around town.  It was fun catching up with family and celebrating her.
While in town we stayed at my favorite B&B, The Hermitage.  It provided the perfect backdrop for a few pictures in between chatfests with the fam.  My dad helped me snap some pics, and the owner of The Hermitage found me afterward to ask if she could see some of the pictures I took of her B&B.  I tried explaining to this 70+ year old woman what a style blog was and why the pictures were not of her B&B, but of me.  She just kind of shrugged it off and told me she liked my coat.

Wag the Dog

I can barely write this post, because I keep awwwwing over these photos.  This little lady is the reason for my more than week long absence.  If you follow me on instagram, it's no secret where my mind has been these last few days.  I'd like to introduce you to Miss Pearl.  My husband and I have been dying to own a dog for years, but we agreed to wait until we were married this fall to look into getting a pup.  Once the ink was (barely) dry on our marriage certificate, we were on a mad search for the perfect addition to our family.  Walking Pearl has quickly become my favorite pastime.

Oh wow, Christmas is in one week!  It has come very quickly this year for some reason.  2014 has been a whirlwind for me with getting married, buying our first home and keeping busy at work.  I am done with Christmas shopping (thank you Mr. Internet, I didn't even have to step foot in one store this year!), and ready to relax, drink some wine hot cocoa and listen to Nat King Cole's Christmas album on repeat.  I'm taking nearly two weeks off this year to stay at home and refocus before the new year.

One thing I may gift to myself this year are a few pairs of nice warm gloves. It's about time I start featuring some gloves on this blog, because I'll tell you what- my fingers were practically frozen after about two minutes of taking pictures.  I usually take a lot of pictures and pick the best, but it was so cold today that I called it a wrap after about 10 pictures.  I was even congratulating myself on using layers to create such a warm look, but I forgot about my hands!

Old Crow

Last Saturday my husband and I went to see our favorite band, Old Crow Medicine Show, in concert in downtown Indy.  We fell in love to their tunes, and even spent our entire honeymoon rocking out to their newest record.  I caught them last time they were in town in 2012, and was excited to see them again.  They put on one heck of a live show.  So when his brother got us tickets as a wedding gift, we were happy to make a night of it.  Going to the concert was the easy part.  Getting dressed was a bit more difficult.

This outfit wins the award for longest time ever being picked out. Seriously, this thing was a beast to put together.  First of all I needed an outfit that looked nice enough for dinner and drinks before the show, but had to be comfortable enough to stand in for several hours.  That nixed any heels or unsupportive shoes.  I knew I wanted to break out my most comfortable (seriously!) boots.  Scot bought me these when we were in Fort Worth, TX last fall.  Despite being ultra comfy, they haven't gotten much wear.  However, my dilemma was creating an outfit that wasn't essentially a costume.  No plaid button downs or cowboy hats here.  It got the husband seal of approval when, without being prompted, he told me he really liked my outfit.  I've trained him well, haven't I?

I am very much a girly girl at heart, so any outfit that gets me called a "lady" not once, but four times in one day is a winner in my book.  Full disclosure, one of those times was a man calling me a "crazy white lady" for wearing a skirt in the winter, but the word lady was in there so it totally counts... right?

Team Spirit

Yesterday I met with a girlfriend to catch the Colts vs. Texans game.  Being born and raised in Indiana, and now living in Indianapolis, my loyalty to the Colts was predetermined.  Despite that fact, I didn't own any Colts gear until I moved away to Seattle and had to show my roots amidst all the Seahawk fans.  Wearing this shirt always feels a little sweeter when it comes with a Colts victory!

It can be tough to make game day gear cute!  It's tempting to throw in a sweatshirt and jeans and call it a day.  Even in college I had a hard time dressing up my Purdue gear to make it more than super casual.  Tossing on a pair of nude pumps and a dark lip made this look a lot more me.

The color of this coat is what my mother unaffectionately calls "baby poop green".  Once she picked out a new color for her kitchen, and it dried close to this color. She was horrified at the thought of having a color reminiscent of a dirty diaper splashed on her walls.  She couldn't have repainted that room more quickly if she tried!  Oddly enough the color she detested on her walls works perfectly for a winter coat.  One woman's (color) trash is another woman's treasure I suppose.

Put a Belt On It!

Good thing I had this belt today.  If you follow me on instagram you know that this dress was super big on me.  I basically had to cinch it in the back and belt it to get any shape out of it.  I have considered donating this dress in the past, but I always put it off because I don't have a ton of long sleeve dresses I can transition from fall to winter.  After trying it on and wearing it today, it's going right into the donation bin!  Luckily I could get one more wear out of it (albeit doctored up with a safety pin and leather belt) before sending it to the big closet in the sky!
