Cold Pink

I am doing something I never do today.  Pulling a total Kate Middleton and rocking nude pantyhose.  Yup, it's just me, Kate and the local seniors down at the retirement home wearing our tan hose.  This time of year is always rough, because I want Spring to come so badly that I just go ahead and dress like it's 30 degrees warmer.  Let's be honest, the pantyhose do nothing to keep your legs warmer.  I might be rocking hot pink today, but there is nothing hot about this look.

Profesh

I gotta say that things are really going my way these days.  I have hit a huge professional milestone this week, and to celebrate one of my best girlfriends and I hit happy hour at our favorite local pub.  To commemorate an awesome occasion I (for some unknown reason) chose to wear nearly all black.  It doesn't really seem celebratory, does it?  I need to pop on some bright pink or sequins or something, no?

I did, however, manage to wear one of my all time favorite pieces.  This skirt has been a central part of my wardrobe for a few years now.  I remember spying this tulip skirt at the Gap and patiently waiting for it to go on sale.  Once the price dipped I snagged it and never looked back.   See how else I have styled it here!

Thinkin' Cap

Time with my little pup Pearl is flying by so quickly!  Everyone thinks their dog is the canine equivalent of Einstein, but I gotta say she really is a smarty pants!  She knows sit, down, stay, wait and how to pee on the floor when I look away for 10 seconds.  See? Told ya she's smart.

Each week my husband and I take her to puppy class to teach her manners and socialize her with other dogs.  We basically pay money to roll around on the floor with tons of cute poochies.  You have to dress comfortable enough to chase your pup around, but you don't want to show up in sweatpants.  This is my happy medium.  One part comfy, one part stylish, on part covered in dog hair.

Frozen

Let's talk about zero degree weather please.  I got a few looks whole snapping pics today.  Mostly from people wondering about the state of my mental health for willingly taking off my coat and hat to stand in a frozen alleyway.  As the temperatures drop it gets harder and harder to convince myself to venture outside for outfit pics.  I am already dreaming about the Spring that's promising us it's only a mere four weeks away.  I try and tell myself that sunny=warm, but it's not working.

Heavy Rotation

This black cashmere sweater has been in heavy rotation this winter.  It's a great layering piece, and is so warm that it seemingly begs me to wear it at least once a week.  Even though it is a classic item that could be styled 100 different ways, I keep going back to layering a blouse underneath it and wearing it with trousers.  Note to Kinsey: Next time you wear this sweater tomorrow make sure to mix it up!

My Valentine

You know those people who hate Valentine's Day?  The ones that think it was invented by Hallmark to sell candies and singing teddy bears?  I am so not one of them.  I love it.  I don't buy the "we celebrate our love 365 days of the year so why dedicate a day to it" explanation.  I love me some Valentine's Day.  Always have, always will.  In fact, this year will be the four year anniversary of my my hubs asking me to be his girlfriend on Vday.  We show each other love and affection every other day of the year, but when a day comes along where it is nearly mandatory that your guy cook you steak and rub your feet I am all in.

Wear What You Want. No One Else's Opinion Matters.

Can I get real here for a minute?  I like to make jokes and have a good time on this blog, but I want to write about something serious today.  It stems from a comment I have heard women make over and over again to me.  It happens rather frequently that a woman will look at an outfit I'm wearing and say "I could never pull that off".

Now I don't claim to be a model.  I have my insecurities like everyone else, but I think that us ladies need to give ourselves a break and not let the size and shape of our bodies dictate what we wear.  I advocate wearing flattering and well fitted clothing, but I think style transcends the number on the clothing label.  Seriously, why can't we give ourselves a break?

You can wear high waisted jeans even if you don't have Kate Upton's measurements.  You can wear babydoll dresses if you're larger than a size 12.  You can wear high heels even though you may be taller than your boyfriend.  Want to wear skinny jeans even though you don't consider yourself skinny?  Who cares?  No one else's opinion matters.

And they're going to have opinions.  They'll tell you (or say behind your back) that your skirts are too short, that you can't rock that two piece after having your kid, that you look stumpy in your shorts or that your chin looks bad in turtlenecks.  They'll make you think you can't pull it off when they only one who gets to make that decisions is you.  So if I want to wear these jeans despite the fact my stomach isn't as hard as J.Lo's, I'm just gonna freaking do it because I like it.

Before & After

Contrary to what this may look like, this is not my BEFORE photo for Head & Shoulders products.  We got just the lightest dusting of snow while I was doing blog photos, so I look like I came down with a gnarly case of the flakes. Not so, I swear!

What are your thoughts on wearing four red pieces that don't match? The bag and shoes match and the pants and scarf also match, but all together there is a whole lotta red going on.  I actually love it.  It's matchy matchy and clashy at the same time.  It's a new trend that I just made up!

Decisions

How do you get dressed?  Not the physical act of putting on clothes- I mastered that weeks years ago, but how do you choose your clothing?  For me, it seems like it is different each day.  During the week, I pick out my clothes the night before and pack them away in my gym bag so I can get dressed in the locker room after spin.  I usually take into account the weather forecast, how long I'll be expected to be on my feet, if I need to look extra profesh for meetings or if I want a look that will transition well to happy hour after work.

My daily needs vary, hence my outfits are always of different comfort and dressiness.  I like that flexibility, because it allows me to wear a fancy dress one day and relaxed pants the next.  I can dress like a fancy lumberjack Monday and a modern day Mary Tyler Moore on Tuesday.  I don't envy people who wear uniforms or who have a very strict dress code that don't allow for some play.  It would save me a lot of time and money, but let's be honest: who needs more time and money?
