Little House on the Prairie

For some reason I feel kind of "Little House on the Prairie" in this look.  Whether it's the long skirt or the loosely pulled back braid, I spent the whole day vacillating between feeling my look and wondering if I was a century or two behind the times.  Luckily my love of pattern mixing helped to modernize the look!

Backwards

Looking very senior picture-esque today aren't we?  You know, I don't like to play favorites with m outfits, but something about this look is just really making me happy.  I have had this cotton polka dot dress since last summer but I never really like wearing it much because it was too baggy in the waist to be flattering.  I never really found a belt that looked right with it, so it just sat in my closet only to be worn around the house.

I decided if I couldn't find the right belt, maybe I could use something else.  I opened my scarf drawer for the first time in months and pulled out this purple scarf I've had for so long I don't even remember acquiring it.  Used as a belt, it is exactly what I was looking for.  And I didn't stop there.  I didn't have a small neck kercheif so I used an old silk belt as a scarf.  How backwards is that?  It ended up making one of my favorite looks of 2016.

Mellow Yellow

The past few days have been H-O-T.  I take one look at my closet and mentally nix about 80% of it, because all you can bear in the heat is a little dress.  Luckily I have quite a collection of summer dresses, and this yellow number fit the bill perfectly.  I still felt sticky in about 10 seconds, but that's Indiana summer for you.  Maybe the bright color of this dress distracted people from my instantly deflated hair and melty makeup.  Fall, come on down!

Kayute

I know this has happened to you  before.  You go to Target to pick up only one thing.  You end up leaving with a receipt for over $100 worth of items you impulse bought.  Every. Damn. Time!  You need blinders in that place! If this has never happened to me please close your browser or turn off your phone and go away because we have no business being friends.
Even as I am focusing more on quality and not quantity of my clothing now, I still find myself pulled into Target's laser beam of inexpensive and super kayute clothes.  Last month I ran into Target for contact solution and some travel sized shampoo for my trip to Italy.  I walked out with two dresses that I wanted to bring with me on my trip.  I am so glad I did, because this dress was on repeat during my trip.  It was the perfect balance of casual and dressy, and helped me transition well from day to night while traveling.  Perfection!

Blush + Dust

This week is Indy Burger Week and I couldn't wait to check out some of the local burger scene.  I grabbed a girlfriend and we hit a spot close to home featuring some cheap local brews and a yummy pulled pork covered burger.  In preparation for this feast I knew I needed something comfortable and stretchy a la Thanksgiving attire.  I had all but forgotten about this top (check out the last time I featured it back in 2010!), but when I found it buried in the back of  my closet I immediately thought it would look great with my blush pleated skirt from Banana Republic.  Toss on some sandals and I was ready to strap on the ole feedbag.  How delish does this look?

So 70s

I'm a bit of a problem solver.  Hair kind of greasy and limp from humidity?  Put a hat on it.  Makeup melty from the heat?  Sunglasses fix it all.  Boom.  I'm typically not a hat person, but when you have a bad hair day you have no choice!  The hat paired well with the 70s throwback flares and bright orange I chose for the day, so win win!

Summertime

Thanks to early morning facebook check ins I am aware that today is the first day of Summer.  Can you think of a better summer outfit than this?  White eyelet sundress, hot pink cape and turquoise pumps.  The fact that I could only stomach shooting pictures for about 4 minutes before my face started to melt off my hair went limp is also pretty indicative that my third favorite season (sorry winter, you know you're a loser) is now upon us!

Ask the Weatherman

I'll admit that I rarely look at the forecast before deciding what to wear.   When I was a kid in the Spring I would ask my mom every day if it was warm enough to wear shorts.  Every day she would tell me yes or no until one day she got sick of me asking and told me to go watch the weatherman.  I never did (sorry Mom)!

Yesterday I learned two very valuable life lessons.  1) Don't wear leather when it's 90 degrees out. 2) Don't wear leather when rain is forecasted.  I was hit with two waves of fashion regret even though I genuinely love this skirt.  I was hot hot hot the second I stepped outside, and later got caught in a torrential downpour (even with an umbrella) and was soaked. Lesson learned: always check with the weatherman before getting dressed!

Forever 30

In the words of Buddy the Elf: "I'm in love! I'm in love and I don't care who knows it!"  Because hello, please look at this romper/dress hybrid I snagged for less than 30 bucks!  Any guesses where this little beauty is from?  I'll give you a clue: I am about 9 years too old to shop there.  It was worth wading through the teens to come out with this bad boy.  I swear if someone made a Forever 30 I would shop there daily.  It would have comfortable heels, work appropriate dresses and maybe some not gross sweatpants for Netflix and Chill dates.  A girl can dream...
